I only have positive things to say about my experiences with the Makikita organisation. The main thing I love about Makikita is that while it is a small organization the main focus is always helping and supporting children and their families. You are able to see exactly where all donations go and how all the children benefit from the volunteers’ work. I was fortunate enough to spend three and half months in Huancayo and work with Juliana. During this time I worked in the nursery, in the Makikita centre but mainly with the street children programme. Everyone I worked with was very friendly and made me feel welcome. I especially enjoyed helping take children on different outings. All the children I met were beautiful, lovely, funny and a joy to help. I found the language barrier became less so with the children. However, as my Spanish was not very good I took several Spanish classes, these were very useful and you benefit from 1 on 1 teaching. I lived in the volunteer accommodation which was very nice and in a good, safe location. This was also an excellent way to meet other people and make friends. While working with the children is the main focus Juliana also ensures that you enjoy Huancayo and the surrounding country; weekends away and group meals were a lot of fun. All members of Makikita and Juliana’s family made me feel incredibly welcome and I now consider them my Peruvian family. I have already booked my ticket to return this year and I have no doubt it won’t be my last visit. Makikita quykuway truly is very special!
