I have volunteered in various countries around the world but would say that my experience with Makikita was definitely the most rewarding. I can not recommend it enough! Julianna has an absolute heart of gold and goes above and beyond to help both the children and her volunteers. I researched a few projects before choosing Makikita and after speaking to people who worked for other organisations, am happy that I made the right choice.
I stayed in a lovely apartment close to the centre of Huancayo. It was a great way to get to know the other volunteers, and made a good base for exploring the town. In the day I taught English classes to the primary students. They were all wonderful and very excited to learn English. Every lesson began and ended with lots of hugs and kisses! I think one of my most rewarding moments was when the students started quizzing new volunteers on their names and favourite things in English! Makikita also runs a homework club in the afternoon which is a lot of fun to help out at. I certainly brushed up my maths skills!
From the aspect of experiencing a country, there is no better way than to spend your mornings teaching children English, your afternoons shopping in local markets, and then the evenings sampling food in the delicious restaurants of Huancayo. If you have any questions, Julianna is always there to help out. From recommending bars to planning weekends away, there is a wealth of information in the office and always someone on hand to help you make the most of your stay.
