Makikita Quykuway is a fantastic charity. Working with the children in the Makikita programme was a fun and thoroughly rewarding experience. For a month we volunteered in the community centre as well as with street children in the Yachay programme and we had a great time working in both programmes.
In the community centre we helped with homework and joined in with the games and activities run for the children. As we settled in we organised more activities ourselves, I taught the children basic Italian and James started doing music lessons, playing the guitar and helping the children’s English with sing-alongs to some One Direction songs (on popular demand!).
Working with the street children was slightly more of a challenge, but a lot of fun nonetheless. We taught basic English and maths skills, but tried to make the lessons more exciting for the children with numerous games of bingo, stickers and lots of lollipops!
Life in Huancayo is really exciting; there is a lot to do in and around the city and we must say that the karaoke bars are particularly good! As a result, we have made lifelong friends from our experience. Living in the volunteer house is really sociable and the apartments are lovely.
Juliana is an absolute angel – what she does for the charity is fantastic and her hospitality and kindness to all the volunteers is remarkable. Thank you Juliana!
It can often be hard to find a charity to volunteer for in which you can personally see the benefits of your work and support. With Makikita, your time and donations are so worthwhile, when you see how much of a change you are making to the childrens’ lives. We really hope to come back one day to see all those little smiling email@example.com
