I participated in a couple of projects. The first was providing physiotherapy services at a medical clinic and a school for disabled children. The staff at the medical clinic and the school were welcoming and easy to work with. The people/families receiving physiotherapy services were really great to work with. Juliana was receptive to new ideas from volunteers and was always willing make your idea a reality by using her resources to help you. The second project was the after school program where the kids receive help with their homework followed by a fun activity. The kids who attend the program are full of energy and fun, and enjoy having new volunteers to play with and learn from.
I was well supported both whilst volunteering and in my free time with many planned activities and social events. Juliana has a lot of advice to offer about things to do around Huancayo so you will be never short of something fun to do in your weekends! There are a variety of weekend trips you can do. I would recommend the Huaytapallana glacier (a tough hike but well worth the journey!).
The accommodation is comfortable and is close to a supermarket, places to eat and the city centre. Having basic Spanish was helpful, but not essential as you can have Spanish lessons which are held close to the volunteer accommodation.
Despite being a small organization, Makikita Quykuway does an excellent job of helping the community in Huancayo. Volunteering at Makikita Quykuway was an incredible experience that I will never forget. I would recommend Makikita Quykuway to anyone who is looking for an organization with a variety of projects, and a real Peruvian cultural experience. Thank you Juliana and Makikita Quykuway!
